eSIM Installation Guide

To use an eSIM, you need and unlocked eSIM enabled device.

How to install an eSIM

The eSIM installation process can vary depending on the device and the mobile operator you are using. In general, however, the process typically involves the following steps:

First, you will need to make sure that your device is eSIM-compatible and that you have an active eSIM plan with a mobile operator.

Next, you will need to locate the eSIM settings on your device. This can usually be found in the device's settings menu under a section labeled "Cellular," "Mobile Network," or something similar.

Once you have located the eSIM settings, you will need to select the option to add a new eSIM profile or line. This will typically prompt your device to display a QR code or a series of numbers that you will need to enter into the mobile operator's website or mobile app.

Follow the instructions provided by your mobile operator to activate the eSIM profile. This may involve scanning the QR code or entering the numbers into the mobile operator's website or app.

Once the eSIM profile has been activated, your device should automatically detect and connect to the new eSIM profile. You may need to restart your device or manually select the eSIM profile in your device's settings menu to begin using it.

Depending on your mobile operator, you may also need to install any necessary profile updates or settings in order to use your eSIM properly. Follow any additional instructions provided by your mobile operator to complete the eSIM installation process.

What happens in the background?

An eSIM profile is typically requested from a SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus) server when a user initiates the activation process for an eSIM on their device. The SM-DP+ server is responsible for managing the activation of eSIM profiles and ensuring that the process is secure.

To request an eSIM profile from an SM-DP+ server, the user's device will typically send a request over a secure connection, such as HTTPS. The request will contain information about the mobile operator and the specific eSIM plan the user has subscribed to, as well as any necessary authentication credentials.

The SM-DP+ server will verify the request and send back a response containing the eSIM profile data. The eSIM profile data is encrypted and can only be accessed and installed on the device by the Subscription Manager (SM), which is a secure component of the device's operating system.

The SM will decrypt the eSIM profile data and install it onto the device, sometimes activating the eSIM in the process. The eSIM profile contains information about the mobile operator and the specific eSIM plan the user has subscribed to, as well as any necessary settings and profile updates.

Once the eSIM profile has been installed and activated, the device will be able to connect to the mobile network and use the eSIM for mobile data and voice services. The entire process is designed to be secure and ensure that only authorized eSIM profiles can be installed onto a device.
